Omirice and Spicy Potato Stew 1.01.2021

Not the traditional Korean setting for New Years but this was nice after a fun night spent with lots of food and drinks the night before.

I made some Korean omitice (egg over rice) and spicy potato stew for my boyfriend to eat for dinner and also to bring to work the next day.

The sauce on top for is very simple and it is also used for korean fried prok cutlet donkatsu.

Sauce Ingredients:

  • 1 tbsp flour
  • 2 tbsp oil
  • 2 tbsp ketchup
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1.5 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp vinegar
  • 1 cup water


First cook the flour and oil until it turns a dark brown color and then add in rest of the ingredients and cook through. You will have enough sauce for more than one serving. (Sauce recipe credit to famous Korean Chek Paik Jong Won)

Now the sauce is done it is time to make the fried rice to go under the egg and sauce. Fried rice you can really cook to your liking but I would say it should at least have onion and carrot.

Fried Rice Ingredients:

  • 1 bowl of rice
  • 1/8 of carrot small diced
  • 1/4 of onion small diced
  • 1/6 of canned spam ham small diced
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce
  • Sesame oil
  • Cooking oil


First put some sesame oil to a heated frying pan and add in the carrots and onions first. Once it has cooked halfway through add in the spam ham. When cooked, add in the rice(should be cooled and cold rice) and the seasoning. Adding in cooking oil as needed to not burn. Let it all cook through and mixed well together. Put in a bowl and invert with a bigger plate to make a round shape.

Now it is time for the egg blanket over rice. Beat 3 eggs together. To heated pan with oil add in the eggs and gently stir as if making scrambled eggs cooking halfway through still somewhat jiggly. Place the egg blanket over the rice and then top it with the sauce. To pair with this, I made spicy potato stew.

Spicy Potato Stew Ingredients:

  • 1 idaho potato
  • 1/2 onion
  • 1/2 medium korean squash or 1 small korean squash
  • Korean spicy red pepper powder
  • 1 tbsp minced garlic
  • 1 big green onion
  • 4 cups of water
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp of fish sauce
  • Bit of black pepper
  • Sesame oil


First we will peel the potato and slice it into half moon shapes of about 0.5 inch thickness. Slice the onion and dice the green onion. Wash and slice the squash into same size and shape as the potato.

Once the veggies are prepped, into a pot put in 2 tbsp of sesame oil, potatoes and 2 tbsp of korean spicy red pepper powder to stir fry on low heat just for a little bit. Then we will put in 4 cups of water let it come to a boil. When potatoes are half way cooked through add in the onions, green onions and squash. Add in the 1 tbsp of soy sauce, 1 tbsp of fish sauce, 1 tbsp of minced garlic and bit of black pepper. Let everything cook though and enjoy!
